Institutional Ethics & MWD

Metropolitan Water District works to fulfill its mission in an ethical way. That involves attention to the individual ethics of directors, officers, employees and contractors. And, it involves attention to institutional ethics: how Metropolitan, as an agency, pays attention to its corporate social responsibility, stewardship and efforts toward sustainability.

The focus of Metropolitan’s Ethics Office is individual ethics. The Office works with directors, officers, employees, contractors and members of the public to ensure that individuals who represent Metropolitan comply with all state and agency ethical requirements and to assist individuals in making ethically ideal choices whenever possible.

However, Metropolitan is also deeply concerned about its institutional ethics. Various programs at MWD promote the welfare of our employees, local economy and community. Other programs work to sustain resources as we fulfill our mission. In addition, as one of the world’s major distributors of water, Metropolitan has developed programs that address the District’s obligation to protect this limited resource. Here are some examples of MWD institutional ethics programs:

Corporate Social Responsibilites

“Coming together is a beginning.  Keeping together is progress.  Working together is success.”
- Henry Ford

Metropolitan expresses its interest in social responsibility through programs that promote the interests of employees, local economy and local community.

Some of the MWD programs that promote our local economy and service area include Business Outreach, Community Partnering Programs and Solar Cup. Educational opportunities and training and development programs encourage our employees to continue their personal and professional development.

Stweardship

"When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world."
- John Muir

This value is identified as one of Metropolitan’s six core values because we recognize the importance of serving as a global leader in addressing current and future water scarcity.

BeWaterWise, Innovative Conservation Program, California Friendly, and the Southern California Water Forum encourage individuals, communities and institutions of higher education to work with MWD to protect the global water supply.

Sustainability

"The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children."
- Dietrich Bonhoeffer, German theologian

These are programs that demonstrate how Metropolitan is making the best use of resources – human and natural. The agency supports the value of sustainability by working to decrease the size of our carbon footprint and by nurturing the growth and development of a workforce for today and in the future.

Metropolitan has developed a program that mandates a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle program for all of our facilities. In addition, the RideShare program rewards employees for using public and alternative transportation.

Links to many of these programs can be found on the Metropolitan Water District home page.
