"Blue Line Oasis," by artist Lynn Aldrich, greets commuters
at the Artesia train station with several images of water to remind them
of the area's history.
"The area is well-known for its artesian wells, a well that reaches
surface through it's own pressure," said Aldrich, who often uses
water in her artwork as a metaphor for life and energy. "I thought
that was an appropriate metaphor for urban experience and our constant
striving for renewal."
A large mosaic and stone "well" greets passengers on entry
to the station. Steel and copper "coins" appear to have been
tossed into the center of the well. The area is landscaped with tall palm
trees like a desert oasis and the well is a symbol of soothing refreshment
of body and spirit and also serves as a seating area for waiting passengers.
Along the pathway into the station are strips of blue concrete panelsetched
with references to our universal human longingsleading the observer
toward a low wall of blue and green mosaic waves. The waves lead to the
station platform, where ceramic tiles bear the wishes of children for
their community.
