Richard Turner's early schooling was in Vietnam and Taiwan, and he later spent five years traveling in Burma, Thailand and China. Influences from those travels are evident in his "Wall Gazing Gallery," an environmental sculpture reminiscent of Asian shrines found along country roads.

Located in the courtyard of California State University, Fullerton's Visual Arts Center, the piece uses cedar, corrugated steel and rock to create a quiet place for meditation.

Its title is derived from a Bhuddist story about the legendary saint, Bodhidharma, who is said to have meditated for seven years, staring unblinkingly at the wall of a cave. Viewers are encouraged to sit in the enclosure and look out through the falling water into the reflecting pool.
