SPECIAL FEATURES OF MEMBER AGENCY
The City of Pasadena joined Metropolitan as one of
its original member cities. Pasadena Water and Power
currently provides water for the City of Pasadena and
some unincorporated areas in Altadena, East Pasadena
and San Gabriel. PWP has over 37,000 water meters to
serve its customers. Pasadena residents consumed nearly
10 billion gallons or nearly 33,000 acre-feet in 2002.
PWP has approximately 500 miles of pipe, 14 storage
reservoirs, 16 groundwater wells, and related facilities.
A Water System Master Plan was completed in 2002. The
plan recommended an extensive infrastructure capital
improvement program to the year 2020. Currently, PWP
is in the midst of replacing or rehabilitating approximately
230 miles of pipelines built before 1945, performing
a seismic study of the reservoirs, and upgrading pumping
stations. PWP has its own water quality lab that regularly
tests its water citywide to ensure a safe, reliable
supply of water.
PWP has been a leader in maximizing the use of local
water resources. In 1990 it constructed a treatment
facility for the removal of volatile organic compounds
from groundwater, and in 1992 it installed facilities
for injection and spreading of imported water in the
local groundwater basin. Plans are underway to expand
PWP’s ability to capture local runoff and to begin
using reclaimed water to supplement water supplies.
PWP is also proud to continue to offer its customers
many of the MWD-sponsored programs and rebates such
as: ULFTs, Dual-Flush ULFTs, high-efficiency clothes
washers, low-flow flushometers, pre-rinse kitchen sprayers,
water-pressurized brooms, and cooling tower conductivity
controllers. PWP has also helped bring zero-consumption
urinal technology to many city facilities and customer
locations with the help of state and MWD funding.
